Information Security Fundamentals
From 274CREDS

Security controls only make sense once you know what they are protecting and how much it is worth. This course covers asset classification, data lifecycle management, and the difference between confidentiality, integrity, and availability requirements in real systems. You will work through access control models, encryption at rest and in transit, secure configuration baselines, and the logging that makes any of it verifiable. Governance is treated as a working tool rather than a compliance chore: you will write a usable policy, map it to controls, and see how frameworks such as ISO 27001 and the NIST Cybersecurity Framework connect the two. The result is the vocabulary and judgement to make defensible security decisions.

Curriculum

Learning Path

Each level is enrolled separately. Work through them in order, or start at the level that matches your experience.

  1. Level 01

    Beginner

    274 CREDS

    Purpose

Classify information before protecting it, since a control applied evenly to everything protects the wrong things well.

    Outcome

You can classify data and justify why each label was chosen.

    What You'll Learn
    • Assign classification levels to a realistic set of documents and data stores.
    • Map the lifecycle of one record from creation through retention to disposal.
    • Decide which of confidentiality, integrity, and availability dominates for each class.
  2. Level 02

    Intermediate

    407 CREDS

    Purpose

Apply the core technical controls, which are a small set used repeatedly rather than a long list.

    Outcome

You can apply and verify the controls that carry most of the load.

    What You'll Learn
    • Configure access control on a shared resource and prove least privilege holds.
    • Encrypt data at rest and in transit and confirm what each protects against.
    • Set a secure configuration baseline and check a host against it.
  3. Level 03

    Advanced

    730 CREDS

    Purpose

Make security verifiable, because a control nobody can evidence is indistinguishable from one that was never applied.

    Outcome

You can show evidence that a control is working, not just that it exists.

    What You'll Learn
    • Design logging that captures who did what to which asset and when.
    • Retain and protect logs so they remain admissible later.
    • Build a control matrix that maps each requirement to its evidence.
  4. Level 04

    Expert

    993 CREDS

    Purpose

Use governance as a working instrument rather than an annual compliance chore.

    Outcome

You can run a security programme that holds up to an external audit.

    What You'll Learn
    • Write a policy short enough that people actually follow it.
    • Map your controls onto ISO 27001 and the NIST Cybersecurity Framework and find the gaps.
    • Run a control review and decide what to retire as well as what to add.
